Clement Drew
1806-1889

American. Born 27 November 1806 Kingston, Massachusetts. Son of Baptist deacon, farmer, and shipsmith. 1827 working in Boston drygoods store; 1831 selling carpets; worked with William Lloyd Garrison to abolish slavery. 1846 opened store as art dealer, framer, oil painter and artist supply dealer with "picture lending service." Son George joined the business as "photographist" 1863. Travelled extensively along the coast painting coastal scenes, vessels and lighthouses. Died 31 May 1889, Roxbury, MA.

Collections: Mariners Museum, Newport News, Virginia; Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachusetts; United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.
